Day 18: Resourceful, Not Redneck

Published on: January 18, 2018January 19, 2018 by Missy O'Brien Category:365 Days of Mirth 7 Comments

My house has an unmistakable Shabby Chic/Cottage vibe – I’m a great believer in making a virtue of necessity. Dents? Nicks? Flaws? A vintage well-used patina? A flea-market feel? Pretend that it’s deliberate and was expensive to achieve. Those gouges in the hardwood floor I refinished? I beat it...

Day 17: Guilty As Charged

Published on: January 17, 2018January 17, 2018 by Missy O'Brien Category:365 Days of Mirth 2 Comments

Karmic punishment is swift and terrible – where I’m concerned, there’s none of this waiting-for-doom-in-the-next-life stuff. One day, I’m cracking jokes about aging-hippie silversmiths whose hands are stained with forging gemstones, and the next my own hands are permanently dyed the same shade of scarlet. God only knows what...

Day 16: Blood From A Turnip

In a perfect world – or even just a pleasant one – generosity would rule. Kindness would wrap us all in warmth. Honesty would triumph. Day 15: Sign, Sign, Everywhere A Sign

Published on: January 15, 2018January 15, 2018 by Missy O'Brien Category:365 Days of Mirth 4 Comments

For almost six decades, now, I’ve been told what to do – an endless barrage of authoritarian orders. Mind you, I’m not blaming my parents. Survival depends upon following the advice and guidance of those who love and protect you during those early years. Now that I’m a parent...

Day 14: How To Human 101

Published on: January 14, 2018 by Missy O'Brien Category:365 Days of Mirth 4 Comments

You don’t have to be a stable genius to pass for a decent human being. All it takes is a little consideration for other people. Even fake civility will take you far. It’s enlightened self-interest – the very very best interest, believe me. First:  Don’t spit your gum out...

The Search for Mirth

Gratitude is easy — you’re upright with a pulse and still remember where you live? Grateful, and done!

Mirth is hard — one look at the headlines can rob you of the will to live. Why bother with pointless exercises like brushing your teeth or breathing?

And so I search for Mirth — a capricious mistress, whimsical and perverse and untidy and contrary. But that’s what makes her interesting.

While misery loves company, Mirth enjoys it even more. Thanks for joining me!

I don't know how the hell to spell frankincense, either. It's a terrible title for a blog. Just subscribe to Mirth or bookmark the site, and you'll never have to fumble-finger it again.
