Day 3: When Willpower Won’t

Published on: January 3, 2018 by Missy O'Brien Category:365 Days of Mirth 5 Comments

No wonder the clerk at Barnes & Noble laughed. I was distracted and oblivious, too wrapped up in myself to treat her as a fellow-traveler on the same journey. I ignored her, more or less, anxious to be on my way. I wasn’t rude, but I wasn’t kind –...

Day 2: Mildewed Mystery

Published on: January 2, 2018 by Missy O'Brien Category:365 Days of Mirth 4 Comments

It appeared as if from God, wadded up on the floor of the laundry room. Mind you, that’s also the furnace room and the water heater room and the catch-all storage/work room that my kids always referred to as MomLand. Don’t be getting ideas about some lovely Pinterest-worthy laundry...

Day 1: Heavily Armed, Easily Pissed

Published on: January 1, 2018 by Missy O'Brien Category:365 Days of Mirth 8 Comments

I dash to the store early on this crisp bright New Year’s morning, full of resolution and enthusiasm. I’m proud of myself: I breathe deeply and overcome my irritation at discovering that there isn’t an ounce of coffee in the house. I don’t curse bitterly as I scrape thick...

The Search for Mirth

Gratitude is easy — you’re upright with a pulse and still remember where you live? Grateful, and done!

Mirth is hard — one look at the headlines can rob you of the will to live. Why bother with pointless exercises like brushing your teeth or breathing?

And so I search for Mirth — a capricious mistress, whimsical and perverse and untidy and contrary. But that’s what makes her interesting.

While misery loves company, Mirth enjoys it even more. Thanks for joining me!

I don't know how the hell to spell frankincense, either. It's a terrible title for a blog. Just subscribe to Mirth or bookmark the site, and you'll never have to fumble-finger it again.
